Where? Philmont, New York
When? Wednesday, Aug 14 - Wednesday, Aug 21
The Village of Philmont and Free Columbia have started a public/private partnership for the next 21 years! We will be turning a warehouse owned by the village into a cultural center to house Free Columbia’s initiatives and performances, as well as other events and activities! In addition to this warehouse, a circle of community members have pooled money to purchase an old building on main street to turn into housing and programming space.
We are excited to be hosting what will be the first of many future building volunteer retreats to take the first steps in this transformation!
We have floor space, camping space, food, good fellowship and meaningful work for everyone who can make it out. If you have only come for certain times or days you are still heartily welcomed!
What we will be doing:
- cleaning
- sealing surfaces
- painting
- erecting safety fencing
- landscaping
- clearing
- demolition
- building window shutters
- repairing doors
- creating insulation frames for old windows

“I gotta get out of bed and get a hammer and a nail
Learn how to use my hands, not just my head
I’ll think myself into jail
Now I know a refuge never grows
From a chin in a hand in a thoughtful pose
Gotta tend the earth if you want a rose.”
